Canvas of Courage
Art as Memory, Resistance, and Healing
As part of the 2025 UK/Kenya Season of Culture, this gathering was more than just a cultural event — it was a timely moment of reflection, truth-telling, and imagination. Supported by the British Council and The Africa Centre, it created space to explore the stories that have shaped us, the histories we’ve inherited, and the creative tools we now hold to reshape them.
The panel discussions — Canvas of Courage, Daughters of Freedom, Home and Away, and Purpose-Led Partnerships — were designed to confront colonial legacies, honour untold histories, and spotlight the power of art, memory, and community in shaping a more just future.
For African communities and young people especially, these conversations remain essential. They offer a mirror, a bridge, and a blueprint — affirming that storytelling is not just remembrance, but resistance and renewal.
This event also served as our Pre-London showcase — a chance to reflect on the journey of Echoes of Freedom so far and share what’s ahead for our Richmond Park exhibition and the conversations we hope to spark in the UK this Madaraka Weekend.
Together, we are not just remembering history. We are rewriting our place in it.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this powerful gathering. It was a day of deep conversations, creative collaborations, and inspiring connections.
